NHSSAA WINTER SYMPOSIUM 2025
National High School Sports Analytics Association (NHSSAA) Winter Symposium is a free, live event (on Zoom) on Sunday February 2, 2025 from 12-1pm ET.
The theme of the event is learning how to do original sports analytics research. They will:
1) Discuss the research process by talking with an award-winning high school sports researcher
2) See firsthand the power of R, which is one of the main data science/visualization tools that almost all teams use today, from a baseball analytics professional.
The first speaker will be Bailey Hall. Bailey is a high school senior and won the 2024 Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Convention Poster Presentation Award at SABR's Annual Convention last summer for her poster, “Leadoff Walk vs. Leadoff Single: Which is Actually Worse?” Bailey will discuss how she was inspired to solve a problem that few have tried to solve and also share the steps in her research journey.
The second speaker will be Max Marchi. He has been working in the Cleveland Guardians R&D department since 2014. He started playing baseball at the age of six in a soccer-crazy country. Max graduated from the University of Bologna with a BS in Statistics. He was a contributor for The Hardball Times and Baseball Prospectus websites and co-authored the book Analyzing Baseball Data with R, which sold over 10,000 copies over three editions and was translated to Japanese. Max will introduce R, which is the main programming and statistical analysis tool that sports analysts use, by walking through an example of how he and his team used the tool to help one of Cleveland’s star players.
The Zoom link will be emailed to registrants closer to the event date.
